The conversations validated what many of us suspected: the foundations for AI governance are already in place, but most organizations aren’t acting fast enough to use them.

1. Privacy Maturity = The Foundation for AI Governance
- What we knew: Privacy programs have always been the proving ground for defensibility.
- What the Summit confirmed: Mature privacy programs (consistent, documented, and defensible) are the natural launchpad for AI governance. The disciplines of risk assessment, standardized processes, and regulator-ready documentation are directly applicable to AI.
- Why it matters now: If you can’t prove your decisions in privacy today, you won’t be able to establish them in AI tomorrow. Boards and regulators are already connecting the dots. Organizations with a solid foundation in privacy will be well-positioned to lead the way. Those without will be forced to catch up under pressure.
2. Privacy + Security Must Work Together
- What we knew: Privacy and security often operate in parallel, but not necessarily in sync.
- What the Summit confirmed: AI governance fails in silos. Security leaders openly admitted: “We want governance guidance, but we don’t have it.” Privacy and Legal know the rules. Security knows the systems. Neither can succeed alone.
- Why it matters now: This is the moment for privacy leaders to step into a bigger role – not as auditors, but as orchestrators. Embedding governance into security and product conversations is how organizations move from reactive oversight to proactive leadership.

- Why it matters now: Without governance-level tracking, every AI incident becomes a liability. Consistency isn’t optional; it’s the difference between defensibility and exposure. Leaders who extend incident response practices into AI today will be prepared when regulators start asking tomorrow.
4. AI System Inventory = The Entry Point
- What we knew: You can’t govern what you can’t see.
- What the Summit confirmed: Most companies don’t know how many AI systems they’re actually running. Even security leaders admitted this gap. Yet inventory is the starting point for defensibility. It provides visibility, enables monitoring, and satisfies regulators who won’t accept “we didn’t know.”
- Why it matters now: Building an AI system inventory today is a low-regret, high-value endeavor. It strengthens your privacy program, supports security, and positions you for future regulatory requirements. Without it, everything else is guesswork.
5. Waiting = Falling Behind
- What we knew: Regulation was on the way.
- What the Summit confirmed: It’s already here. The EU AI Act is live. U.S. state laws like Colorado’s are following fast. And here’s the crucial point: even if you don’t think the EU AI Act applies to you, its structure and standards will influence every other law that follows. U.S. regulations are unlikely to change. Waiting isn’t just risky, it’s unrealistic.
- Why it matters now: Acting early means you set the pace. Waiting means you’ll be scrambling in a fire drill when regulators or boards demand answers. Leaders who start now by extending privacy maturity into defensible governance and building visibility through inventory will be the ones best prepared when enforcement arrives.
Final Thoughts: From Privacy to Future-Proofing
The AI Risk Summit didn’t just raise new questions. It confirmed the trajectory we’ve all been watching: privacy maturity is the foundation, AI risk is the extension, and defensible controls are the connective tissue.
For compliance leaders, this isn’t a future-state exercise. It’s today’s agenda. The question is whether you’ll wait until regulators force the issue or act now to lead with confidence.
